Symbolism of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature Logo
Background
The Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature had always used the Mace as its symbol. The design of the Mace was derived from the Provincial Coat of Arms.
In 2003, the Service Board of the Legislature took a decision to develop new symbols for the Legislature. It also decided that the new symbol would replace the Mace as its corporate identity.
Requests for submission of proposals from individuals, schools and constituency offices were issued.
After consideration of the submissions that were received, the Service Board decided that the Dome, in which the Legislature Chamber is housed, is the most discernible feature of the legislature complex from which the logo of the Legislature could be derived.
To make the appropriate aesthetic impact, the design incorporates the Dome, the entrance to the Legislature offices and the two large cooling towers on either side of the entrance which, when silhouetted, present an image identical to pillars.
The design, together with the Corporate Identity specifications hereunder was then adopted as an official symbol of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature.
Symbolism
The Dome
Notwithstanding its peculiarity, the Dome, which houses the Legislature Chamber, was designed to be a democratic seat of power. This consideration is confirmed by the civic square (Isigcawu), which is spread out openly to allow the public easy access to the Legislature Chamber. Similarly, the layout of the benches inside the chamber presents a picture of co-operation and consultation between the ruling party and the opposition. The public galleries are as close as possible to the chamber floor to emphasize the principle of public participation in the process of governance.
